Characters with and without spaces
The main count includes every character: letters, digits, punctuation, spaces and line breaks. "Characters (no spaces)" removes all whitespace, which some translation agencies and school assignments use for pricing and limits.
Common character limits
| Where | Limit |
|---|---|
| X (Twitter) post, standard account | 280 |
| SMS text message (one segment) | 160 (70 if it contains emoji or non-Latin characters) |
| Google search result title (shown) | About 50–60 |
| Meta description (shown) | About 150–160 |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 |
| YouTube video title | 100 |
Platforms change their limits from time to time, so treat these as a guide. Google trims titles and descriptions by pixel width rather than an exact character count.
How emoji are counted
This counter counts what you see: a single emoji, even one built from several code points like 👍🏽 or a family emoji, is one character. Some platforms count emoji as two characters, so leave a little room if you use many of them.
