The four case styles
- UPPERCASE — every letter capitalised. Good for short labels and acronyms; long passages in capitals are hard to read.
- lowercase — every letter small. Handy for cleaning up text before reformatting it.
- Title Case — major words capitalised, while short words such as "a", "of", "and" and "the" stay lowercase unless they start the title. Used for headlines and book titles.
- Sentence case — only the first letter of each sentence (and the word "I") capitalised. Used for most body text and many modern headings.
Tips
Converting to lowercase or sentence case also lowercases names and acronyms such as "NASA" or "Paris", so check proper nouns afterwards. Title case follows common style-guide rules, but AP, Chicago and APA differ slightly on words like "with" and "from".
