How to add and subtract fractions
- Find a common denominator (the least common multiple of the two denominators).
- Rewrite each fraction with that denominator.
- Add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator.
- Simplify by dividing top and bottom by their greatest common factor.
Example: 1/4 + 2/3 → common denominator 12 → 3/12 + 8/12 = 11/12.
How to multiply fractions
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then simplify: 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2.
How to divide fractions
Flip the second fraction (take its reciprocal) and multiply: 3/4 ÷ 1/2 = 3/4 × 2/1 = 6/4 = 1 1/2.
Mixed numbers
To use a mixed number such as 2 1/3, turn it into an improper fraction first: 2 × 3 + 1 = 7, so 2 1/3 = 7/3. The calculator does this automatically — just type the whole number, a space, and the fraction.
